On our way to reunify a child, we found Derartu’s photo attached to a missing person flier on the streets of Ambo. When we reached out, we talked to her mother which came as a big surprise because Derartu told us she lives with her stepmother. We think that this was because she wanted us to sympathize with her and maybe not send her back, thinking her stepmother was a bad person. When our team came back to the EH and talked to Derartu, we learned that she also lied to us about why she came to Addis. She didn’t have a reason, she just run away from home. her mother, having no idea about her daughter’s whereabouts or her safety, had fallen sick for a month after Derartu’s disappearance. She couldn’t eat, sleep or properly communicate with others. When she heard from our team on the phone, it was a miracle. She didn’t leave a stone unturned to find her daughter and eventually gave up but finally got the call. She was extremely thankful for this second chance to touch, hug and kiss her daughter.
